Harrison Fisher; Ralph Fletcher Seymour (illustrator). [viii]pp.1-186 [i] Fair Condition. Some wear and discolouration to the blue fabric covers, as well as some areas of damage and staining to the pasted-on illustration. Cracked front hinge, some age-related discolouration to the pages, but nothing that interferes with the text or illustrations in any significant way. Harold MacGrath (1871-1932) was a prolific American author of best-selling popular fiction, as well as screenplays. Eighteen of his forty novels were turned into films, some more than once. Three others were turned into Broadway plays. He wrote works of popular fiction, including romances, thrillers, and adventure stories. In 1912 he was the first well-known author to be hired to produce material for a film directly. Hearts & Masks is a perfect example of the type of mass market romance adventure for which MacGrather was famous. The story centres on a wealthy socialite named Thalia Drummond. While engaged to one man, she finds herself having fallen in love with another, a mysterious individual who wears a mask and goes by the name "The Sparrow." With her wedding approaching, a family secret is uncovering, adding and element of mystery to this romance. In addition to being an excellent example of an early-twentieth century mass-market novel, the book also includes beautiful art nouveau illustrations and decorations.
