Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. First edition. Number 112 of 200 copies of the deluxe edition, with an additional suite of plates printed on Japon Nacr. This copy in Fine condition with the original publisher's leather clamshell case as new, with bright gilt on the spine and the original leather clasps in perfect condition. Two black portfolios inside house the full work printed on Rives paper as well as the additional suite of plates. Signed by the artist on the title page in pencil. Based on the beloved fantasy by Lewis Carroll, Salvador Dal's rendition of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland exceeds surrealist expectations. As the reader travels through Dal's Wonderland, they are treated to a brilliantly colored illustration, giving insight into how the painter experienced Carroll's story. An unforgettable adaptation and a striking feat of book artistry. "On the surface, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is a paradise of puns, paradoxes, and anthropomorphism. Underneath, it is a deeply honest portrayal of childhood and adulthood. What unites Carroll's wordplay and analytical anomalies with truth is Alice. She. fumbles through strange, increasingly grown up encounters, and remains honest and curious all the while. She is courageous in the act of growing up.Carroll's classic is an absurd yet magnificently perceptive form of entertainment unlike anything that came before or even after it" (Allen). Alice's impact was immediate. At a time when most children's books were highly didactic and focused on clear-cut morality, Wonderland offered something new and fantastical; it gave young readers an opportunity to be amused, to sort through logical puzzles, and to imagine a world unlike any other in literature. Thanks in part to Carroll, "children's books entered a new, more fantastical phase: instruction with delight" (Allen). Fine in Fine dust jacket.

Salvador Dal's Alice Deluxe Hors Commerce Portfolio with Signed Etching & Complete Japon Nacr Suite DALI, Salvador, illustrator. CARROLL, Lewis. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Twelve Illustrations with Original Woodcuts and an Original Etching by Salvador Dal. New York: Maecenas Press Random House, 1969. Deluxe Edition (H.C.), one of a very small number of hors commerce portfolios reserved for the publisher and collaborators. Large folio (17 x 11 3/8 inches; 431 x 289 mm). Comprising 41 bifolia plus 13 bifolia (the additional suite), paginated [150], [1], [5, blank]. Lewis Carroll's complete text illustrated with one original colored etching (frontispiece), signed in pencil by Dal and numbered H.C., plus twelve color woodcut plates, each with Dal remarques. With the rare additional suite of the twelve illustrations printed on Japon Nacr, as issued to the deluxe copies. Loose as issued, housed in the original two black silk portfolios stamped with Dal's gilt device, and enclosed in the original carrot-colored morocco clamshell with leather ties (ties renewed, as commonly encountered). Minor professional restoration to the upper joint of the clamshell; portfolios and contents pristine, essentially mint. A cornerstone Dal livre d'artiste. Carroll's proto-Surrealist narrative finds its ideal twentieth-century interpreter here: Dal's kinetic silhouettes, liquid spaces, and playful distortions animate Alice with a dream logic uniquely his own. Among the most desirable states of the edition, H.C. deluxe copies combine the signed etching with the full Japon Nacr suite, placing this example at the very top of the hierarchy for collectors of Dal, modern illustration, and major artists' books. Dal's signature etched frontispiece and twelve vivid color woodcuts present his singular interpretation of Lewis Carroll's whimsical world, transforming its iconic characters through the dreamlike distortions of Surrealism. Each heliogravure is further enhanced with Dal's distinctive woodcut remarques, adding a unique, personal touch to every plate. Dal's Alice in Wonderland remains one of the most remarkable artistic collaborations of the 20th centuryhis imagery amplifying the fantastical essence of Carroll's tale through his unmistakable surrealist vision. The entire edition was limited to 2,500 copies on Mandeure paper, with only 200 deluxe copies issued with the signed etching and additional suite. Michler & Lpsinger 321 - 333.
