First Edition
Rockwell Kent (illustrator). First edition thus, first trade edition illustrated by Rockwell Kent. Hardcover, no dust jacket. EDITION: First Edition Thus -- the first one-volume Random House trade edition, printed by the Lakeside Press for R.R. Donnelley and Sons. Copyright page reads "Copyright 1930 by R.R. Donnelley and Sons Company." Consistent with first printing; no subsequent printing statement present. PUBLISHER: Random House, New York, 1930 CONDITION: Dust Jacket: Not present Book: Good -- black cloth boards show heavy surface scuffing and wear throughout; cloth fraying at crown of spine; silver-stamped lettering and whale illustration on boards and spine remain readable though worn; top edge tanned with cloth fraying at headband; pages uniformly tanned as expected for a 96-year-old volume; text and all Rockwell Kent illustrations clean and legible; binding tight and square. Bears a large, dramatic autograph-style signature in dark marker on the front free endpaper -- provenance unknown, unverified, sold as described. When Random House published this edition in 1930, they were so taken with Rockwell Kent's bold Art Deco woodcut-style illustrations that they left Melville's name off the covers entirely -- billing the illustrator above the author on both the cloth and spine. It was a landmark moment in 20th-century book design and one of the editions credited with rescuing Moby Dick from decades of obscurity. The 280 illustrations remain among the most striking visual interpretations of any American novel. Shipped with care via USPS Media Mail with tracking.
